ATEM Mini and OBS Audio Issue

Andrew

You have your ATEM Mini setup, cameras connected, graphics ready, audio levels are looking good, and the USB cable is firmly connected into your computer. A quick click opens OBS, and you add a new "video capture device." Video starts to flow, the cameras are working, and you think to yourself that the jobs done! A quick test of the stream shows that everything is working... except the audio.

So you double check the settings:

  • Cameras? Coming through clearly.

  • Is the microphone not connected? Nope, everything is plugged in correctly.

  • Maybe the ATEM is having a problem? Nope! The control software shows levels in the audio tab.

  • Maybe OBS is having a problem? It detects the ATEM and even added the audio as a separate mixer track!

  • Insanity? Setting in nicely, thanks for asking.

This was the call I received from friend and former teacher one day. We went beat-for-beat as I asked all of the troubleshooting steps I could think of and they confirmed each had been done. We were able to narrow the problem down to somewhere after the ATEM and before the stream itself. Our combined searching online couldn't locate a remedy. Somewhere in there, waiting, was an audio issue that had us both stumped.

A quick drive over to the local school's gym and we begin diagnosing the problem from the ground up. We started with checking the things listed above, and everything is coming in fine, right up until OBS. I start checking levels coming into Windows, and I can even see some buzzing levels upon cranking the audio to 11, but something still isn't working.

At this point, they go to grab some headphones and I start reading every option, tab, and setting for that audio input coming into the computer. We set the input to play out of the headphones, using the "listen to this device" option in Windows, but that only gives us humming.

Then, as I am reading one of the screens again, a wicked sense of that I have been here before overcomes me. The faded memory of spending hours tangling with this very issue rises up in my mind as I stare into the all-consuming audio abyss. The audio "enhancements" box is checked.

An old enemy slain once again, I uncheck the box and begin to get feedback from the headphones sitting on the table; never has it sounded so good. We bring the levels back down, turn off the listening option, and confirm that, yes, audio is now appearing in OBS and going out to the test stream successfully.

We chat a bit more, go over a few other things, and complain about how none of the searching we did provided the answer of "uncheck this box" to us. I joke that maybe I should start my own site and begin sharing what I've learned.

The Solution

On the computer running OBS:

  1. Open your Settings in Windows 10

  2. Select System from the options

  3. In the left sidebar, select Sound

  4. On the right side, under Related Settings, select Sound Control Panel

  5. In the new window that opened, select the Recording tab

  6. From the list of recording devices, select your ATEM Mini and select Properties

  7. In the properties window, select the Advanced tab.

  8. Disable any setting relating to "Enhancements"

  9. Apply the changes and close all of the windows.
